Welcome to the last newsletter for 2010. We've had a big year at Diamond and Pearl Fabrics. We have settled into our new surroundings in Pulteney Street. Patchwork fabrics are adorning the shelves in the sewing/classroom and we are embracing the new machine brands. We have found the Patchwork classes both stimulating and astounding. The quilts and other sundry items that are being created by both men and women never cease to amaze us. In the technique sewing classes for garments we have seen ladies growing in confidence and producing beautiful garments...

Happy New Year to you all; I hope everyone has great plans for 2011, it's always nice to start with a plan even if it never comes about. For 2011 I just want to do it all. That's a big task, so I guess it would be sensible to start with something achievable, Like a newsletter every 6 weeks, and to finish all the UFO's in my sewing room. Hopefully I can do both. Over the last week I've been looking through some older craft books. I'm astounded at how much sewing techniques and styles have changed. I remember thinking how amazing the new sewing machines were back then. Now having worked with them for the last 3 and a bit years I am still amazed at what can be achieved...

Truly as time travels so fast it's hard to find the time to do those things we love to do. As busy as I think I am, I really think the younger generation are busier. They don't seem to have any time to really slow down and enjoy a hobby, so it was really nice to meet a young lady still in primary school spending 1 ½ hours a week with her grandmother and learning the art of patch working. She came into the shop to buy some fabric for the borders, backing and binding for her second quilt that she was making for her cousin. Taking time to slow down and teach the younger generation to sew I am truly in awe of the grandmother who was obviously creating a wonderful memory for her grandchild. As we get older and look back on our youth, these are the memories that we most cherish.

I hope everyone is using the cooler weather to enjoy some sewing. I have recently read an interesting article in the "Threads" magazine, entitled `Slow Sewing "Quick" isn't the magic word for a good experience' by Patricia Keay. In this interesting article Patricia suggests we join in the revival pf slow sewing - a new old fashioned way to savour the creative experience. If we start to savour our sewing time, while we are striving for excellence, the order produces peace of mind and better results. As we slow down our skills develop. So as we take our time, our sewing will improve and we will become more competent and confident. Remembering that there is always something new to learn - there is room for growth and improvement. Perfection is something we often think is unattainable - but we should always think of doing the best we can right now and appreciate that. By overcoming the challenges we can release our creativity, and have something unique to show for it. Let's take the time to learn something new. It may be topstitching, stippling, or hemming using a wing needle or simply using a new stitch on our sewing machine. Experiment with a new technique - regularly we turn to old favourites - because we know what works and when we are in a hurry, safe is best. Inspiration is all around us. When you're in the mood to sew - but not ready for a new project; tackle a new technique and use it later on the right project. This way we are growing our knowledge and experience.
